Why Is My Motorized Shade Stuck in the Valance? A Real FaceTime Fix & 4-Step Guide
The Weekend Emergency Call
This past weekend, I received a frustrated message from a customer. Their motorized roller shade was completely unresponsive, save for a tiny “twitch” whenever they pressed the remote. Naturally, they assumed the remote control was broken or the motor had completely burned out.
Instead of exchanging a dozen confusing emails, we jumped on a quick FaceTime call. Through the video, I immediately spotted the real culprit: the shade wasn’t broken at all. It was physically jammed.
The bottom rod of the shade had rolled all the way up and gotten wedge tightly inside the valance (the top cassette). Because it was physically stuck, the motor could only twitch, unable to rotate further.

Example of a physical jam: The bottom rod has been pulled too far into the valance casing due to lost limits.
How Did This Happen?
During the call, we figured out the root cause. The customer had accidentally deleted the upper limit on their remote while trying to adjust the settings. Without a programmed stopping point, the motor just kept pulling the fabric up until the thick bottom rod jammed itself inside the valance.
Note on Wide Windows: While this specific case was caused by a limit setting error, another common reason for wide shades to jam is Tube Deflection (the roller tube sagging in the middle). A sagging tube can cause the fabric to roll up unevenly, leading to similar physical jams. If you have windows wider than 90 inches, check out our technical guide on how we prevent this:https://videma.store/extra-wide-motorized-shades-tube-deflection/
If your motorized shade is stuck at the top and only twitching, don’t panic—and definitely don’t try to rip the fabric out by force. Here is the exact 4-step process I walked my customer through on video to fix it in minutes.
The 4-Step Troubleshooting Guide
Step 1: Remove the End Cap
Stop pressing the remote. Forcing the motor while it’s physically jammed can cause permanent damage. Instead, go to the side of the valance and gently remove the side end cap.

Detailed view of the end cap pins. These must align perfectly with the motor head slots to secure the unit.
Step 2: Free the Roller Tube and Bottom Rod
Once the end cap is off, the entire internal roller tube (along with the tightly wound fabric and bottom rod) will be loose. Carefully pull the tube out just enough to unjam the bottom rod from the valance housing. Smooth out the fabric so it hangs freely again.
Step 3: Reinstall and Align the Motor Pin (The Crucial Step)
Carefully place the roller tube back into the valance and prepare to put the end cap back on. Note: Look closely at the inside of the end cap and the head of the motor. You will see a pin on the cap that slides into a specific slot on the motor head. This pin secures the motor in place.

Pro Tip: As shown in the red circle, the pin on the end cap MUST slide perfectly into this specific slot on the motor head to secure it.
Step 4: Reprogram Your Limits (Don’t skip this!)
You might think you are done once the shade is unjammed, but you must reset your upper and lower limits. Why? When you removed the end cap and put it back on in Step 3, the angle of that pin entering the motor slot likely changed slightly from its original factory position. Because the motor relies on this exact physical angle as a reference point for its limits, your old limits are now inaccurate. Grab your manual, pair the remote, and set a new upper and lower limit.
The VIDEMA Difference
By the end of our FaceTime call, the customer had their shade running smoothly again, and they didn’t have to wait days for replacement parts they didn’t actually need.
Sometimes, a few lines of text in an email aren’t enough to diagnose a mechanical issue. That’s why at VIDEMA, we believe in real, face-to-face solutions. If you ever run into a problem with our shades, we are just a video call away, ready to walk you through it step-by-step.
